Additional upgrades for Edenvale’s stormwater system

“The city’s roads and stormwater department have come to the party with this project.”

Residents and businesses in Edenvale can look forward to proposed improvements to the stormwater servitudes in the town.

The most recently proposed improvements will see five measures implemented to the system in the Buurendaal and Hurlyvale areas.

Ward 18 Clr, Heather Hart, believes the addition of three attenuation dams and the improvement of two existing dams will reduce flooding in the Edenvale area.

“It appears that the municipality has heard the concerns of the councillors and the community and that everyone’s perseverance paid off.”

“The city’s roads and stormwater department has come to the party with this project.”

Hart explained that because the Buurendaal attenuation dam cannot be expanded, larger outlet pipes will be installed in the hopes that they allow the water to flow out of it quickly.

The second location to receive attention will be Beverly Spruit.

Although remediation work started on Beverly Spruit between Cowie Avenue and Cunningham Road in May this year an attenuation dam will be included during the upgrades.

In Hurlyvale, two shallow attenuation dams will be constructed in the parks on either side of St Andrews Road.

“The two Hurlyvale dams should not be constantly filled with water,” said Hart.

“They will be wide and shallow dams.”

Hart explained that to allow the construction of the two dams, some trees will have to be removed from the park.

Another location to receive attention will be the existing dam at Horwood’s Farm.

She said the dam will be expanded and widened.

Once this is completed Hart hopes the improved Horwood’s Farm dam will be used by Eastleigh Sea Scouts for their water activities.

Hart explained that once started the project would take six to 12 months to complete.

Community members and affected parties have until September 7 to comment on the project.

A hard copy of the proposal is available at Edenvale Public Library.
