Past learners from St Andrew’s creating a path for women

St Andrew’s School for Girls has already produced a number of woman achieving amazing accomplishments.

With the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) project being full steam ahead at St Andrew’s School for Girls, the school has already produced a number of woman achieving amazing accomplishments in STEAM.

Prof Hannah le Roux matriculated in 1981, is an architect, educator and curator.

In 2017 she was selected as a Fulbright Principal Candidate for an African Research Scholarship and as a research fellow in the Canadian Centre for Architecture/Mellon project, Architecture and the Environment.

Hannah is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Witwatersrand.

Marianne Maccelari also matriculated in 1981 and achieved masters in Mining Engineering.

She spent 15 years at the CSIR Division of Mining Technology where she participated in a diverse range of research projects supporting many of the mining commodity sectors in Southern Africa.

In 2018, Marianne joined ELB Engineering Services as a general manager of projects.

Janice Zhang, matriculated from St Andrews School for Girls in 2008 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand.

Janice now specialises in dams and hydro power and mainly does design work , modelling and analysis using state-of-the-art software, site investigations and costing.

She has worked on various projects in South Africa, Madagascar, Namibia, DRC, Zambia and is currently working on a project in Eswatini.

“It is not always easy working in this very male dominated environment but it is very rewarding, and will constantly keep you on your toes.” said Janice.

She is currently a Civil Engineer at Knight Piésold Consulting Engineers.

Other learners who have also achieved in the fields of STEAM are Caitlin Hanck, Kirsten Grant, Carla Smit, Emma Smith, Leigh-Anne Pepper, Natasha Di Rago and Bulelwa Klaas, who all graduated at the same time as doctors at WITS in 2011.
