Humphreys calls for a garden waste site in Bedfordview

Garden waste removal in Bedfordview must now be transported by residents to Primrose, Marlands, Sebenza or Sandringham.

Ward 20 Clr Jill Humphreys wants the Bedfordview community to enjoy the best out of their gardens as residents take pride in maintaining them.

Despite the community’s proactive approach to maintaining their gardens, Humphreys said as a ward, Bedfordview has never had a garden waste disposal site.

“For this reason, our local waste department extended an additional service of removing for disposal; bags of prunings, clippings, leaves and other collected garden material,” said Humphreys.

She said garden waste has always been put out with normal bins for the weekly disposal service.

“Bedfordview was intended to have its own disposal site. There are suitable sites nearby. From August 1, garden waste removal has been stopped,” said Humphreys.

Garden waste can be disposed of at sites in Primrose, Marlands, Sebenza and Sandringham.

“As much as I appreciate the need to ‘encourage’ residents to transport their own garden waste, it is rapidly becoming counter-productive. Without a local disposal facility, the cost of curbside collection is quickly going to convert to the cost of illegal dumping removals,” said Humphreys.

“It is important for residents who make use of garden services to check with these service providers where they are dumping garden waste,” said Humphreys.

She said Bedfordview has mountains of bags on numerous street corners.

“As much as I have tried through my social media networks to inform and advise residents regarding this process, many residents have no idea what is going on and are outraged that bags are left lying around,” said Humphreys.

“Although there is a will among residents to cooperate in keeping the town clean, there is also resentment and suspicion regarding this process,” said Humphreys.

Bedfordview residents can dispose of garden waste at:

• Simmer and Jack Landfill site, corner of Johann Rissik Road and Meade Crescent, Primrose, Germiston.

• Sebenza site, Bhala Road, contact 011 929 4660 and 011 999 3233.

• Marlands site, corner of Main Reef and Barbara roads, contact 011 999 1267.

• Sandringham site, corner of Club Street and Joseph Street.
