Five suspects arrested for truck hijacking

Truck hijackers caught napping in Yeoville.

Five suspects are in custody after allegedly hijacking a truck in Elandsfontein on August 1 before abandoning it with its driver in Maboneng near Jeppestown.

Cleveland SAPS responded to the information and according to spokesperson Capt Johan Jordaan, the driver of the brewery truck was left unharmed during the ordeal.

“He told police he was hijacked by at least five men who allegedly drove with him to Time Square in Yeoville, where they proceeded to offload the cargo.

“Afterwards, they drove to a petrol garage near Jeppestown and abandoned him along with the truck. A case of truck hijacking was opened and will be transferred to Bedfordview SAPS,” said Jordaan.

He added that officers went to an address in Yeoville whereupon arrival the truck driver positively identified the five men allegedly involved.

“Officers arrested the five suspects, aged between 28 and 44 years, and recovered a white Nissan NP300 loaded with cases of beer.

“Other information received in the area suggested that a number of other light delivery vehicles were loaded with cases of beer, from the same truck, before driving off,” he said. Meanwhile, the case will be investigated by the Provincial Investigating Unit (PIU) with the five suspects already having appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.

Jordaan said police are still searching for other suspects and appeal to anyone who might have information to contact Cleveland SAPS at 011 607 5745.
