Burst pipe leaves runners displaced

Chris Sutton, the organiser of the Gillooly’s Parkrun, is pleased that the leak has been found and fixed.

A leak from a recent burst pipe has been discovered at Gillooly’s Farm, which has also been affecting the Gillooly’s Parkrun.

“We could not find where the leak was coming from, until it was discovered it was resulting from a burst pipe near the old equestrian stables,” said Ward 20 Clr Jill Humphreys.

Humphreys said the burst pipe has been affecting Gillooly’s Parkruns where about 3 000 runners gather at the park every Saturday morning.

For now Humphreys said the burst pipe has been fixed, although she suspects there may be another burst somewhere.

Humphreys said the departments responsible for the burst pipes are Real Estate and Water and Sanitation.

Ward 20 Clr Jill Humphreys has been reporting a leak to CoE for eight months.

“The ground is muddy and what the area needs now is loads of absorbent sand,” said Humphreys.

Humphreys sees a solution being garden waste as Bedfordview does not have an official place where the waste can be disposed of.

“Bedfordview residents have to take garden waste to Huddle Park or to Edenvale. This is going to become a bigger issue,” said Humphreys.

She sees Gillooly’s as the perfect site where garden waste can be used for another purpose.

The running path for the Gillooly’s Parkrun has been affected by the burst pipe.

“I have spoken to metro on this matter and will continue to do so,” said Humphreys.

Another issue at Gillooly’s Farm is ablution facilities, which are either abandoned or not looked after.

“These facilities have been allowed to collapse when they can be used by residents who are attending events such as the parkrun,” said Humphreys.

Mud that has been settling since the burst pipe at Gillooly’s Farm.

“We are very excited that the leak has been found and fixed and we look forward to welcoming back the 400 or so participants who have gone elsewhere. Please return in celebration,” said Sutton.
