The items, including groceries, were recovered in an informal settlement near Jules and Princess streets in Jeppestown.

Cleveland SAPS spokesperson Capt Johan Jordaan said a concerned resident, who witnessed the alleged burglary at about 3.30am and recognised one of the suspects, notified police.

“The witness immediately contacted police and also notified the shop owner. The suspects had already fled when police arrived on scene, however, officers were led by the witness to an address in Jeppestown where one of the alleged suspects resides,” Jordaan said.

“Police searched a hut at which time they recovered the stolen goods. The known suspect was, however, nowhere to be found.”

Jordaan said this operation was the perfect example of what collaboration between SAPS and the community can achieve.

“The SAPS calls on all members of the community to do the same, by acting as our eyes and ears, in the fight against crime. This type of community involvement will help us solve crime a lot quicker, and hopefully, we can celebrate soon in this case by bringing the suspects to book.

“Important for the community members to note is that in accordance with the Criminal Procedure Act, they can effect a citizen’s arrest, should it be in their power to do so,” said Jordaan.
