Malvern residents gather to get answers

Malvern community members addressed by City Power during community hall meeting.

Anxious community members gathered at Malvern Lights on July 27 in hopes of getting adequate answers to their plight around electricity issues, which have recently surfaced in the area.

Among scores of questions, the community demanded feedback on the substation in 300 Persimmon Street following a fire on July 15.

It was previously reported in the EXPRESS that the fire led to a nearly two-day outage in the area.

At the time, City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena explained that the cause of the fire was overloading which emanated from illegal backrooms in the vicinity of the substation.

He stated that this was a challenge of corruption pertaining to illegal connections.

Ward 118 Councillor Neuren Pietersen, who chaired the meeting, aired residents’ frustrations.

“Malvern has been on the receiving end of a spate of power outages,” said Pietersen, noting that the issue of reliable power is directly linked to town planning or building control.

The representative from City Power attending the meeting was Tebogo Sehlako.

“It is important that people steer clear from tampering with the City Power network.

“Community members need to have the confidence that City Power is up to the task and not only that, but to partner with the City through compliance, to ensure that the integrity of the power network which serves us,” said Sehlako.
