Sacred Heart debate team shines

The team has worked hard and was really prepared for the championship.

The Sacred Heart College debate team has been collecting gold this year.

They recently bagged another win at the Absa National Debating Championships.

“We are humbled by this win. The team has worked hard and was really prepared for the championship. They now have a better understanding of the platform they have been given,” said debating coach Itumeleng Mohanoe.

Debater Tariro Banganayi said they are very proud of themselves as a team to bag this win.

“We have prepared and worked hard for this win. We went to the championship with the goal of winning and we achieved. Most importantly, we now know our strengths and weakness as a team,” said Banganayi.

The team said the championship allowed them the opportunity to meet with other debaters from different provinces and afforded them the opportunity to learn from others.

Mohanoe said the journey with the team from when he started training them to now has been amazing.

“I have seen how they have grown as debaters. They have become better and built confidence in themselves and emotional maturity, which is important as a debater,” said Mohanoe.

He said the team still has an eye on a few championships they want to win.

“Just because we have been winning or just won this one, we are not going to relax. We are still going to collect more wins.

“We are busy preparing for our next tournament in August and we hope we also come home with some silver,” said Mohanoe.

Banganayi is currently doing his matric, he said his year will be completed on a high note.

“These wins to me are personal because they are the evidence of my hard work as a debater. I have seen how I have grown and became a better person. I will miss the culture in school debating and the relationships I have built with other debaters,” said Banganayi.
