Yeoville SAPS arrest suspect for murder of shopkeeper

A man has been arrested for a murder and robbery in Yeoville. His accomplices, two other men, are still at large.

Yeoville SAPS arrested one man for murder while two others escaped following a robbery gone wrong at a shop on Rockey Street in Yeoville on July 15.

“Three assailants had entered the shop under the guise of customers and pointed a firearm at the shopkeeper, who was shot and later died,” said Yeoville SAPS spokesperson Capt Sifiso Mabizela.

“The suspects robbed him of a cellphone and demanded money. They then fled with an undisclosed amount before one of them allegedly fired at the shopkeeper, who had followed them into the street,” Mabizela told the EXPRESS.

“Police who were in the area heard the gunshots and responded. They saw the suspects fleeing, called for backup and gave chase.”

Mabizela said the suspects shot at police as they fled the scene on foot.

Officers subsequently returned fire and wounded one suspect, ending the chase on Regent Street.

No bystanders were injured in the exchange while two suspects remain at large.

“The wounded suspect was treated at Yeoville SAPS and later taken to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.

Police have obtained video footage and are currently busy with investigations.

“We urge members of the community to assist in putting the other two suspects behind bars. The arrested suspect was discharged and appeared in court on July 17,” said Mabizela.
