Addressing this contingent, station commander at Cleveland SAPS Col Mpe Motaung urged the community to be proactive in assisting the SAPS in their efforts to change the crime situation in the area for the better.

Max Katz, a volunteer of the forum, discussed upcoming initiatives including the planned formation of WhatsApp street groups.

He also noted and encouraged the importance of knowing one’s neighbours, as this can be a factor in combating crime.

Cleveland CPF secretary Jack van der Vost announced that the forum will hold an AGM on August 3 at Malvern Lights, which will see the election of a new executive committee.

“By being involved in voting for the new executive committee, the community can strengthen Crime Sector Forum Three, thereby empowering it to help the community to fight crime,” noted van der Vost.

A young community member, Ndumiso Zondo, gave an impassioned speech urging the community to attend meetings and to vote leaders in at the AGM. He also encouraged everyone to report incidents of crime to the SAPS.

In support of this, Supt Sharon Barnard of the JMPD said: “At the end of the day, you are closer to the ground than what we are… That is why you need to take control of your own community in partnership with us.” Ward 118 Clr Neuren Pietersen, who was also in attendance, said he was impressed by the turnout.

“It is important for the community to understand that they are participants in the fight against crime,” said Pietersen.

Interim chairperson of the forum Mike Spadino added his voice to the chorus.

“I was most excited by the community’s response to the information session. It shows their concern for crime and that they are willing to help by being involved to combat it,” said Spadino.
