Arlene said that as Mandela Day is a fixture each year, residents should find creative and exciting new ways to help others.

“We were looking for new ideas of how to give back on this day, and thought we would keep it community based,” said Arlene.

Angela said the municipal workers had no idea they would be surprising them with goodie bags.

“We were delighted to show our appreciation to some of those often unacknowledged people who help to make our lives more pleasant.

“It was humbling to honour Madiba’s legacy of inclusion, gratitude and kindness in a small, celebratory way,” said Angela.

Angela said the workers hugged and thanked them, as it brightened up their day.
