Update: Metro speaks on Oriel Stream

Gadebe said they are working on another project to alleviate the problem up the stream.

Complaints about flooding and Oriel Stream embankments crumbling said the city has projects in the pipeline to determine the root of the problem at the stream.

The NEWS reported in its June 26 edition on the city’s process of installing a mattress to stabilise the Oriel Stream embankment.

Spokesperson for Ekurhuleni Themba Gadebe said the city has received complaints from residents on the fallen embankments and flooding at the Oriel Stream.

He said the metro is working on another project to alleviate the problem upstream.

Gadebe said there is one contractor who has been appointed for the installation of the mattress.

Ward 20 Clr Jill Humphreys said the installation of the mattress and gabions is still in progress.

He added that cash flow to complete the installation should not be a problem.

“The total length is 150m. The current budget can only fund 90m, which will be completed by the end of this financial year,” said Gadebe.

Gadebe said the city aims to ensure the gabions do not collapse; however, the servitude is congested and the size of the gabions will differ.

“The Department of Water and Sanitation encourages the installation of galvanised gabion mattresses. The use of gabion boxes is discouraged because it doesn’t look natural. Water Use Licensing and Applications were done and authorisation was obtained,” said Gadebe.

He added that Ward 20 Clr Jill Humphreys requested the top soil be spread in the park.

Humphreys was on site on July 5 and progress is on track.
