EMPD cracks down on Sebenza’s illegal hawkers

“It is imperative that hawkers cooperate fully in the observance of the city’s by-laws to avert the confiscation of their goods and being slapped with fines.”

City of Ekurhuleni’s integrated by-law team and MMC for Community Safety Clr Pheladi Mmoko cracked down on illegal hawkers when they visited Sebenza.

The special operation held on July 2 was focused on cleaning up the area, ensuring hawkers carry valid permits and ensuring that health regulations are adhered to.

Led by EMPD’s northern operational area director of operations, Gwen Gina, officers from specialised units, Edenvale precinct officers and traffic wardens took part in the operation.

The operation was led by EMPD’s northern operational area director Gwen Gina.

Members from specialised units, Edenvale metro police and traffic wardens took part.

“The operations yielded dozens of illicit cigarettes, dagga, over 50 bottles and cans of beer and a variety of foodstuffs and fruits,” said EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago.

“The authorities are aware the industrial area is far from the shops and I am certain that the workers in the area appreciate the convenience of purchasing foodstuff at their doorstep,” said Mmoko.

“It is imperative that hawkers cooperate fully in the observance of the city’s by-laws to avert the confiscation of their goods and being slapped with fines,” Mmoko added.

Kgasago said some hawkers fled and abandoned their goods when the officers approached them.

“Those who stayed were advised on procedure to follow in obtaining a valid trading permit as well as keeping their stalls in a hygienic condition at all times,” said Kgasago.

He said periodic special operations will be conducted in the area to ensure full compliance with the city’s by-laws.
