Morninghill residents take matters into their own hands

The clean-up kicked off at 3pm, where students who are registered for Community Hours were also invited.

The Morninghill Community Clean-up Group came together on June 22 to clean along the Jukskei River in Bedfofdview.

Morninghill resident and organiser of the The Morninghill Community Clean-up Group, Ang Lloyd said she has been concerned about the state of the Jukskei River for some time now.

She said that litter washes down from the CBD.

“The municipality lacks the resources to clear up all the plastic and I was tired of nothing being done. I decided to mobilise residents to try and do something,” said Lloyd.

Morninghill residents came out to clean up along the Jukskei River.

The group managed to collect about 10 bags of rubbish, mostly being small pieces of polystyrene.

“The amount of plastic is frightening and either we leave it for the municipality to clear or we just do it ourselves. It’s annoying because we pay rates and taxes but we don’t really have a choice at this point.”

She added that the wildlife in the area is affected, such as ducks and fish, and action needs to be taken, even if it means residents taking things into their own hands.

“Bedfordview ward councillor Jill Humphreys is fighting for more litter traps upstream to treat and help alleviate the problem, as well as the reinstatement of a wetland near Queen’s High School, which will hopefully act as a filter. In the meantime we can’t sit back and do nothing,” said Lloyd.

Polystyrene pieces were all over the area, which is detrimental to the environment.

The next clean-up will be held on July 20 from 3.30pm.

The group will meet at the Morninghill Green Park, corner Malan Avenue and Clarkson Street.
