Nkomo spoke on issues such as economic development, water services as well as safety and security.

In the budget speech, Ngobeni said Johannesburg Water was allocated an operating budget of R11.5-billion for the 2019/2020 financial year, with a three-year capital budget of R3.2-b.

According to Nkomo, Ward 32’s key projects include the upgrading of water infrastructure, construction of reservoirs, renewal and maintenance of existing water infrastructure, water demand management and the renewal of bulk waste treatment plants.

“There are ongoing challenges of failing and aged water infrastructure in our area. I will continue to engage with Joburg Water to ensure the budget will serve our area as well,” said Nkomo.

On economic development, Nkomo highlighted plans to have opportunity centres for emerging entrepreneurs and a database for jobseekers to find work opportunities.

“A Klipfontein View opportunity centre was launched on June 20. The facility is equipped to provide startups with the necessary guidance and resources to compete in the city’s growing economy,” said Nkomo.

He also highlighted plans to make vulnerable community members feel secure and safe.

“In the first quarter of the coming financial year, CoJ will deploy an additional 1 500 new JMPD officers who will help police the streets and protect communities. Currently, 800 JMPD officers are visible and on duty every day, policing throughout the city,” said Ngobeni.

He said he receives complaints from residents and at CPF meetings about traffic infringements and illegal dumping along Modderfontein Road, which can also be directed to the CoJ WhatsApp hotline, which can also be used for reporting reckless driving.

“Ward 32 has many challenges, but the community needs to be sensitive to other areas, including neighbouring places like Klipfontein and Alexandra which are in desperate need of basic services, such as tarred roads and electricity,” said Nkomo.

He reminded residents that Pikitup tends to illegal dumping on pavements, streets and council-owned land. Illegal dumping in parks is the responsibility of City Parks.
