Road traffic signs are there for a reason

Mokeseng said that drivers need to obey all road signs, as there is a reason that they are there.

Motorists have been questioning various efforts made by the City of Ekurhuleni to make traffic flow in Bedfordview safer and more durable.

This has been made apparent by the installation of the traffic lights at Harper Road Bridge in Bedfordview.

Media liaison officer for EMPD, Kobelu Mokheseng provided basic safety tips to follow when travelling.

Mokheseng said speed limits varies for different areas and roads. In a built-up area the speed limit is 60km/h while outside a built-up area or a freeway it ranges from 100km/h to 120km/h.

“Emergency vehicles are the only vehicles allowed to exceed speed limits. They have a right to do this as reasonable execution to do their job,” said Mokheseng.

Mokheseng advised motorists to keep to the speed limit at all times.

Motorists have expressed their concerns over speeding by motorists on Van Buuren Road going through the Norman, Pamin and Kloof roads intersections.

Mokheseng said that the speed limit on these roads is 60km/h.

“We will monitor the route to ensure that speeding does not persist,” said Mokheseng.

Concerning skipping red traffic lights, he said that some motorists are completely disregarding red traffic lights.

“If you skip a red traffic light, there is a fine of R500 that will be issued to you by an official,” said Mokheseng.

“You are not just driving your vehicle, you are driving the left, right and front and back vehicle as well,” said Mokheseng.

He said that when you arrive at a traffic circle or a yield sign, keep other motorists and pedestrians in mind and ensure to check your blind spot.

“There are signs that regulate, warn and inform you. You should never ignore any road sign,” said Mokheseng.
