CoE improvements to Brickfield Road underway

“As far as I am aware the project is on track and the city is pushing for it to be completed by the end of its financial year in June.”

Motorists and business owners can look forward to a new and improved Brickfield Road, hopefully by the end of June.

Just over a year ago the road was closed due to the poor condition of its surface and constant flooding of the road.

After heavy rains, the road often resembled little more than a pond, forcing motorists to make use of alternative routes.

Ward 92 Clr Tiziana Plaskitt give a thumbs up for the improvements being done to Brickfield Road and the stormwater infrastructure alongside it.

Since 2016, the condition of the road had deteriorated and developed potholes.

Ward 92 Clr Tiziana Plaskitt said the rehabilitation project conducted by the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) started early in May and is set to be completed by the end of June.

It will not only see the road rehabilitated, but also the stormwater infrastructure alongside it.

Plaskitt said the previous stormwater infrastructure was damaged and silted up which contributed to flooding in the area, specifically businesses on Fleming Road.

“The upgrades to the stormwater infrastructure should alleviate flooding in the area.”

Plaskitt said the upgrades to the stormwater infrastructure will continue to the intersection of Brickfield and Fleming roads, where it will be connected to stormwater pipes which were rehabilitated and improved last year.

From the Brickfield and Fleming roads intersection, the stormwater infrastructure will continue under Herman Road and carry the water under the R24 highway and towards Hurlyvale.

In total, the project will cost R4-million. Plaskitt said half of the funds will be used to improve the road while the other half will go towards the stormwater infrastructure.

The construction underway which will see improvements made to Brickfield Road and surrounding infrastructure.

“Brickfield Road is a very important road as it connects businesses in Meadowdale to those in Elandsfontein and Germiston’s greater industrial area.”

Plaskitt said she will be in constant communication with the CoE, contractors and consultants working on the project.
