One of at least four robbers apprehended in Cyrildene

Three suspects escaped while one is arrested in Cyrildene house breaking.

Cleveland police arrested one man and are searching for several more suspected of committing house robbery in Cyrildene.

This came after at least four men allegedly forced their way through the security gate of a driveway at a house on Beryl Street at about 1.30pm on May 7.

The occupants, who were home, locked themselves inside a room after being alerted to the intruders.

According to Cleveland SAPS spokesperson Capt Johan Jordaan, the men used a white Mahindra light delivery vehicle as a getaway car.

“They were already inside the yard with a bakkie and parked it as if the house belonged to them.

“Three of the suspects went up onto the veranda and forced the front security gate and door open with a crowbar before ransacking part of the house,” said Jordaan.

“Security in the area were notified of the robbery in progress and responded. An officer with 7 Arrows Security arrived while the suspects were removing goods from the house.

“Three of them ran to the back of the yard and jumped over the fence. One suspect attempted to drive off, but the security officer fired several shots at the vehicle and the suspect lost control and collided with a tree.”

Jordaan said a 31-year-old man was arrested while the vehicle, which had false registration plates, was confiscated.

“House breaking implements that were used in the crime were also confiscated. The suspect who was apprehended has already appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on a charge of house robbery. Investigations continue.”
