Seventeen schools to compete in 24th EADS festival

At this year's festival, community members can expect to see two new adjudicators, namely Zethu Dlomo-Mphahlele and Lihan Pretorius.

The 24th Annual High School Drama Festival hosted by Edenvale Acting and Drama Society (EADS) will see learners from 17 schools take to the stage.

Local schools such as Edenglen, Edenvale, Holy Rosary, Bishop Bavin, Jeppe Boys and Jeppe Girls will go head-to-head against each other and many others between May 6 and May 11.

At this year’s festival, community members can expect to see two new adjudicators, namely Zethu Dlomo-Mphahlele and Lihan Pretorius.

Zethu, who stars as Lwandle in the Mzansi Magic Sunday evening drama The Herd, studied at the University of the Witwatersrand where she acquired her honours equivalent bachelor’s degree in dramatic art (2010).

She has starred in several South African series and films, including Fanie Fourie’s Lobola, Room 9, Ayeye and Isibaya.

Internationally, Zethu has featured in HBO series Number One Ladies Detective Agency, Mary and Martha and Starz Network series, Black Sails.

Lihan studied law at the North-West University in Potchefstroom, as well as (musical) theatre direction in Pretoria.

His first break occurred in 2008, when he and a university friend, Franco Prinsloo, co-wrote and Pretorius directed the cabaret Maanmond, based on the works of Breyten Breytenbach.

He has worked in television as a freelance director on the soap opera Egoli and acted as a consultant and freelance director on professional musical theatre productions such as Beauty and the Beast, Grease, Mamma Mia! and Evita.

Since 2016, Lihan has achieved several national successes.

The festival will be held at EADS’ home, St Chad’s Anglican Church, on the corner of Eighth Avenue and Fourth Street, where it has been established for over 25 years.

Entrance to the parking is located on Seventh Avenue.

Tickets will be on sale at the door at R20 each during performance week and R30 each for the finals on May 18.

During performance week, the curtain goes up at 7.30pm and on finals at 6.30pm.
