Update: Metro responds to concerns about Eastleigh

Clr Hart previously said she had made efforts to address concerns about Eastleigh, all of which failed.

The City of Ekurhuleni responded to concerns raised by Edenvale resident Stephen Ridge about the Eastleigh industrial area on Main, Fountain and Edendale roads.

Ridge explained that the influx of dustbin diggers, fast-food vendors who cook on open fires, taxis that park everywhere, the long-dead palm tree and the community centre were concerns which needed attention.

Ward 18 Clr Heather Hart and Ward 19 Clr William Rundle also commented on the concerns.

Hart previously said she had made efforts to address concerns about Eastleigh, all of which failed, and

Rundle previously said that Edendale Road, Central Avenue and Main Road were problem areas that were well documented with the metro.

City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe said the problem at corner Fountain and Central streets in Eastleigh was caused by scrap metal operations.

Gadebe said the metro had previously cleaned the area and provided a bulk container, but that did not deter people from illegal dumping.

“The metro has also written notices to the owners of the scrap metal business to comply with provisions of council by-laws regarding cleanliness of premises.”

Following the metro’s response, Hart said more needed to be done by the metro on a daily basis.

She said the metro’s response showed that they had identified the cause of the increasing urban decay.

“While they have attempted to address the problem, they do not seem to realise that this cannot be a once-off.

“The metro has cleaners, EMPD are on the ground daily and they need to be fining all parties on a daily basis,” said Hart.
