Voting stations will operate from 7am to 9pm, while special votes, which began on May 6, conclude today.

Ward 118 has five voting stations that will operate.

These are Athlone Girls High School, Eastgate Primary School, Kensington Ridge Primary School, Malvern Tent on Pandora Road and Denver Men’s Hostel.

Ward 118 councillor Neuren Pietersen urged residents to go out in their numbers and to ensure their voices are heard.

“I encourage all residents to take advantage of this opportunity to make their mark and to choose their leaders for the next five years.

“Elections are incredibly important and is a way for the community, as a shareholder in the country, to decide who should lead the country to prosperity,” said Pietersen.

Cleveland SAPS spokesperson Capt Johan Jordaan said police will maintain a heavy presence and conduct ongoing patrols, particularly at the Denver hostel.

Jordaan said this will be in an effort to deter any election-related crime.

He gave the following safety tips:

• Do not engage in any arguments with politicians.

• Do not intimidate or assault one another.

• Do not engage in any form of crime at voting stations.

• Do not cause harmful damage to property.

• Do not incite hate speech or crime.
