Spokesperson Sgt Jacob Mashile said police officers will be deployed throughout the station’s policing precinct and at voting stations.

“We will be working hand in hand with the Electoral Commission of South Africa, upholding the electoral act and ensuring the rights of citizens are protected.”

Officers at voting stations will be stationed outside the perimeter of each station.

“If there is an emergency or if we are called upon by the presiding officer at the station, officers will respond accordingly.”

He urged voters to follow these safety tips on voting day:

• Be vigilant of your surroundings.

• Make sure vehicles are locked and remember to physically check if doors are locked.

• Do not leave valuables visible in vehicles.

• Keep personal possessions in a safe place.

• Beware of pickpockets and any behaviour which could be considered suspicious.

“Residents need to be tolerant of each other, especially of those wearing political regalia.”
