Vibrate colours, art, food and all things artistic, is the beauty of Maboneng situated east of the inner city.
Since its establishment in 2009, the area has been a place to express the beauty of art and Joburg culture.
The name means “place of light”, and it really brought light to an area that was forgotten.
The EXPRESS went on a tour with resident Bonginkosi Mashilo.
He shared what makes the place special.
Bonginkosi moved to Maboneng in 2018 which he describes as the best decision for him as an artist.
“I came with a friend for a day of fun, good food and a great time. I was hooked. I loved the energy, beauty and especially the culture. I did not want to leave.”
As you walk the streets you find special moments that make you fall in love with the environment.
A coffee shop invites you in, to sit quietly in the corner and enjoy a good book.
“That’s what makes the area special. It has a different meaning to everyone who visits, do business, work and live there.
“People come here because it’s a magical place where artists share their work and are not judged. Fashion lovers wear whatever they feel comfortable in and people do not stare,”said Bonginkosi
Bonginkosi also points out his favourite place, a patisserie shop, Cinnamon which is part of Joburg Culinary and Pastry School.
For a Saturday morning, you would think people are sleeping since it’s a weekend, but the streets are already bustling with street vendors putting their work on display and setting up the stalls.
“You are guaranteed to find an interesting piece from one of the street vendors. Everyone has something special to offer and if you visualise it, they can make it for you,” said Bonginkosi.
He said Maboneng opened his eyes to different cultures due to the richness in diversity.
“I have met so many people from Africa who share their stories of how they came to South Africa,” said Bonginkosi.
Maboneng also offers opportunities to young entrepreneurs.
“The area created space where young people can showcases their products or service. You find the most amazing young business owners here. Businesses here complement each other,” said Bonginkosi.
Another one of Bonginkosi’s favourite hang-out spots is The Bioscope, an independent cinema that hosts a variety of alternative local films.
It’s been ten years since the development of Maboneng, and this mini city keeps growing with more possibilities by attracting amazing talents.
