Two robbers target fast-food outlet

Police are appealing to anyone who may have information to come forward.

Cleveland SAPS launched a manhunt for two suspects who robbed a fast-food restaurant on Jules Street and held up staff in broad daylight on April 1.

Police are appealing to anyone who may have information to come forward.

Cleveland SAPS spokesperson Johan Jordaan said the incident occurred at about 2.45pm when a suspect, armed with a knife, accosted an employee and forced the person to open the cash register.

“The suspect with the knife went around the counter and forced the employee to open the cash register, which was empty. The other suspect held up a security guard at gunpoint near the entrance.

“A shot was fired into the ceiling as they fled the scene. One customer sustained minor injuries after falling to the ground while trying to escape,” said Jordaan.

The EXPRESS visited the outlet and spoke to an employee who did not want to be named.

“I noticed the two men approaching the store and saw one of them pointing a gun at the security guard. My immediate instinct was to run to safety to the back of the store,” said the employee.

“The one robber forced the cash register open. His accomplice threatened to shoot a customer who resisted when asked for his cellphone and money,” the employee told the EXPRESS.

The men took an undisclosed amount of cash and a cellphone.

Jordaan said a case of business robbery is being investigated.
