Much-needed donations delivered to Zimbabwean Consulate

Much-needed donations for victims of Cyclone Idai are set to be transported to Zimbabwe.

During recent weeks, donations collected by residents’ group Edenvale Community Legends were dropped off at the Zimbabwean Consulate in Bedfordview.

The donations largely included clothing and food items and will be distributed to those in need with the consulate’s assistance.

On April 4 the group made its sixth delivery of donated items.

Patrick Chibwe, from the group and founder of the initiative, said the drive was started to assist as many victims of the cyclone as possible.

“The group has a strong community spirit and tries to assist where it can,” said Patrick.

“The donation drive, which received a lot of support, gave the community the opportunity to help others.”

Fellow member Arthur Mushamba said when the group were informed of the cyclone members of the group were deeply touched.

The cyclone caused severe damage in several African countries, killed hundreds and left many more homeless.

“No one was prepared for it. As a group, we sat down and tried to think of the best way to help the victims,” explained Arthur.

The group hopes to continue assisting the victims until the region is re-established.

“We are appealing to the community to donate medication in addition to the food and clothes,” said Patrick.
