Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) firefighters responded swiftly to the blaze, five minutes after the emergency was reported at 6.16pm on April 9.

Firefighters from Edenvale, Bedfordview and Primrose fire stations assisted in extinguishing the flames.

Three fire engines, two major industrial pumpers and a rescue pumper were used at the scene.

Nineteen firefighters, including four managers, responded.

“On arrival, flames from the workshop had spread to neighbouring shops through the roof section,” said DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi.

“Immediately a flame knock-down strategy was initiated.”

Firefighters contained the flames using two attack lines from opposite directions, preventing further damage to the rest of the structure.

Ntladi said of the nine vehicles, six were extensively damaged while three were partially damaged.

Seven vehicles were not damaged and no casualties were reported.

Ntladi said the cause of the fire is still unknown and will be investigated.
