Vehicle safety awareness at HCL

The Household Consumers’ League meets at the James Sadie Auditorium Bedfordview, every second Wednesday of the month at 9.30am.

Household Consumers League (HCL) members were given a talk and demonstration on road safety for the month of March.

Collen Jacobs, retired safety risk manager at Iscor, reminded members of the basics of driving and how to maintain their motor vehicles.

“The most important thing is awareness.

“Check that your tyre pressure is correct. Also check under your car for oil leaks, and be aware of the little things, do not just drive off. “This will go a long way in avoiding break-downs and accidents,” said Collen.

Other helpful tips from Collen were:

• Make sure that your spare tyre is ready to be used at any time.

• Have a jack and wheel spanner of the correct size in your boot. It is always a good thing to keep a first aid box, fire extinguisher, triangles and torch in the car.

• Ensure that the tank is filled with the correct fuel, petrol or diesel – also in the event of hiring a car – a mistake here could be very costly.

• Be careful when buying spare parts, some may not be the real thing despite the serial number.

• Retreads are no longer sold, be careful of buying second hand tyres.
