With the hopes of helping animals in need, Edenvale Youth Desk member Devin Hitchings has started a donation drive after the death of his beloved pet.
The tribute donation drive was started after Hitching’s Irish wolfhound, Buddy, had to be put down on March 4.
Buddy was recently taken to the vet where it was discovered he had lung cancer after some X-rays were taken.
Devin said the decision to euthanise buddy was made so he did not suffer.
“Buddy was a big rock for all of us. He was more than just a dog, he had been with us through thick and thin.
“During the 11 years that he was with us, he was always a happy dog.”
Devin explained the idea for the donation drive started when a colleague suggested he do something to honour and celebrate Buddy.
“It was a bit rough to get the idea going as Buddy had just died, but I decided to try and help other animals through his death,” said Devin.
He got in touch with staff at the Bedfordview and Germiston SPCA, who assisted in getting the idea started.
He later spoke to staff at Edenvale SPCA, who also agreed to facilitate the donation drive.
“If community members want to take part they can go to either SPCA and donate the food or blankets.
“All they need to say is that it in honour of Buddy the Irish wolfhound.”
Alternatively, Devin can be contacted to collect and take donations to one of the SPCAs.
The donations will be used by the SPCAs to care for the animals at the facilities.
