72-year-old woman allegedly raped by garden worker

Jordaan said the elderly woman was pushed back into the house after opening the door.

A 72-year-old Kensington woman was raped inside her residence on February 4.

“It is alleged that she was raped by a man she had employed as a garden worker. The incident occurred at about 6.30pm when the victim, who was indoors at her house, answered to a knock at the door,” said Capt Johan Jordaan of the Cleveland SAPS.

Jordaan said the elderly woman was pushed back into the house after opening the door.

It is unknown if the victim, who was home alone at the time of the incident, occupies the residence with other people.

“He grabbed her by the arm after asking for a screwdriver. He strangled her as he pushed her towards the bedroom and onto her bed. The suspect removed her clothes as well as his own and raped her.”

Jordaan said the suspect took the woman to the bathroom after he had raped her.

It is unclear why the woman was taken to the bathroom, where the suspect subsequently received a call on his cellphone shortly afterwards.

“When he answered the phone, the woman started to scream for help and ran outside into the street. The suspect managed to get away,” said Jordaan.

“We will leave no stone unturned to arrest the suspect,” he said.

“Members of the public are urged to come forward with any information on this suspect. Cleveland Police Station can be contacted on 011 607 5745/6/7.

“Members of the Hillbrow Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit will investigate the case and hopefully the suspect will be arrested soon.”
