“The large number of unlicensed firearms recovered and confiscated have been booked into evidence for further forensic investigation,” said Flying Squad spokesperson Desmond Subramoney. “These included three R5 rifles, an AK47, a dash prop rifle, as well as a single Girsan 9mm pistol and a Browning Hi-Power 9mm handgun.”

Subramoney said a total of seven suspects were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition and attempted murder; four for possession of drugs, while a suspect each was arrested for housebreaking, theft common, attempted murder and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

All 15 suspects, aged between 23 and 42, will appear in different courtrooms of the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court to face their charges.

“Members of the public are encouraged to continue to collaborate with police by reporting crime and any suspicious people and activities. Information may be given anonymously by phoning the Crime Stop 08600 10111 hotline or calling the nearest police station,” said Subramoney.
