Update: SAPS spokesperson confirms rape and house robbery on Valentine’s Day in Kensington

The EXPRESS contacted Jordaan this evening to again confirm that a house robbery and rape were reported after the EXPRESS was accused of publishing false information on social media and that no rape had occurred.

For the second time, Cleveland SAPS spokesperson Capt Johann Jordaan told the EXPRESS that a rape and robbery occurred on Valentine’s Day on York Street in Kensington.

“The information published is the same as the information in our docket. It was a house robbery and rape,” Jordaan told Joburg East Express editor, Marietta Lombard this evening.

“More information will not be made public to the media or others as this is a sensitive case,” said Jordaan.

He told the EXPRESS he could not release information on the identity of the victims to the media.

Information, only released by the SAPS, will be published by the EXPRESS when reporting on crime, especially during the early stages of investigation, to ensure we do not jeopardise any police investigations and court proceedings.

The EXPRESS contacted Jordaan this evening to again confirm that a house robbery and rape were reported after the EXPRESS was accused in social media posts of publishing false information and that a rape had not occurred.

“It is unethical to insist on a rape victim’s identity and then contact that person to question the rape. The media cannot make the identity of a rape victim public. Our main priority in this case was to confirm the incident reported, and obtain and publish the information, which police officers believe will not harm investigations. We respect the Criminal Procedures Act and adhere to the Press Code. The authority responsible for investigating crime is the police and thus we will publish the information which the SAPS believe can be made public to ensure investigations and court proceedings are not jeorpardised,” said Lombard.
