The event was held under the auspices of Toastmasters International, with winners of the respective Toastmasters club contests, expected to compete at area and divisional competitions before lining up at the World Championships of Public Speaking in Colorado, USA, scheduled for August this year.

The competition was divided into three sections, including prepared and unprepared speeches as well as evaluation. Winners were grouped from first to third places in each category. Bedfordview Toastmasters Club will host the next leg of the club competitions on February 28, before it is Elmapark Edenvale’s turn on March 19.

“Toastmasters International is a self-development programme, it’s all about the self,” said EGC Toastmasters president Richard Francis.

“And of course, every now and again, we like to take the skills we’ve learnt to compete against other people who have participated in the same programme to see who’s the best.”

Winners of the three categories on the night were:

Prepared Speeches:

• 1st place – Richard Francis

• 2nd place – Joy Stander

• 3rd place – Sheryl Mulligan
