CoJ lights up with new substation

The city invested approximately R1.2-billion into the project.

With the hopes of improving power supply to Johannesburg, the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) unveiled a new substation in Sebenza.

The station was built to prevent power outages arising from electricity demand exceeding supply across the city.

It has three 315 MVA transformers with space for a fourth, once the fourth has been installed it will be connected to a 400kV network.

Executive mayor of CoJ Clr Herman Mashaba said the substation will bolster economic activity throughout the city.

Areas which will benefit from the substation include Modderfontein, Gresswold, Sandringham, Alexandra, Athol Oaklands, Rosebank, Melrose and Parkhurst.

Mashaba said the construction formed part of the city’s Diphetogo strategy which addresses the city’s need for improved electricity infrastructure.

“The prioritisation of this work in the 2018/19 budget will start to achieve the long-term turnaround of the city and the change demanded by residents,” said Mashaba.
