DETAILS: SAPS to investigate attempted murder case after learner is shot at Dowerglen High School

“We understand that arrests were made earlier today in Dunvegan. We will investigate if that case is related to the shooting”

Police will investigate a case of attempted murder following the shooting of a Dowerglen High School learner earlier today (February 13).

Gauteng SAPS spokesperson, Capt Mavela Masondo, said the male learner was shot while in a classroom.

“We are not sure where the suspect came from and police are uncertain if the suspect was running away from anybody,” said Masondo.

William Ntladi, spokesperson for Ekurhuleni’s Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) said the learner was rushed to Edenvale Hospital in a stable condition.

He said the victim was shot twice in the upper abdomen.

“One bullet went through the 18-year-old while the other lodged in his arm. He was taken to the hospital for further treatment.”

Ntladi said emergency services were notified of the shooting at 11.05am.

Three other learners were treated at the school by emergency services. One learner was taken to a hospital and treated for shock.

No suspects have been arrested in connection to this case.

“We understand that arrests were made earlier today in Dunvegan. We will investigate if that case is related to the shooting,” said Masondo.

He said police will conduct an in-depth investigation. “We cannot speculate on anything at the moment.”

Gauteng Department of Education’s spokesperson, Steve Mabona said the department is saddened by the shooting.

He said the learner was caught in the crossfire when the suspect started shooting randomly on the school ground.

“Some shots went through two classroom windows on the first floor, injuring the learner,” said Mabona.

“Parents were informed and all learners of the school have been accounted for.”

The department thanked members of the community for assisting the school and will continue to monitor the situation.
