Unusual techniques displayed at art demonstration

"Water colour painting is a very delicate medium so to attack the paper with sand paper is extremely unusual and quite a shock to most water colourists,"

Paint & Palette Art Group held a demonstration where artist Barbi Vanderwalle showcased her water colour skills for art enthusiasts.

Moira Simonsen, demonstration coordinator of the group, said the demonstration was a resounding success after which several new members joined the group.

It was held on January 19 at the Edenvale Community Centre.

During the demonstration Barbi demonstrated her technique of negative painting with the use of sand paper to achieve the effect of sea spray breaking over rocks.

“Water colour painting is a very delicate medium so to attack the paper with sand paper is extremely unusual and quite a shock to most water colourists,” said Moira.

She explained that a few members were enthusiastic to try the demonstrated techniques.

Barbi also recently came second in the acclaimed international water colour competition.
