Festive season speedsters caught

All speedsters were caught on the morning of December 17.

A 33-year-old male in a white Ford Escort was arrested for speeding at 210km/h, by the EMPD High-Speed Unit (HSU) on the morning of December 17.

EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago said he was arrested on the N12 westbound between the Sam Green bridge and Germiston turnoff.

Kgasago said the man gave unsatisfactory reasoning for speeding, by claiming he was late for work and being followed by a suspicious Mercedes Benz.

On the same day, Kgasago said that a 43-year-old male riding a silver Triumph motorcycle was arrested for doing 185km/h in a 120km/h zone on this same stretch of the N12.

Kgasago said he claimed he was rushing to Chris Hani Hospital to visit a sick child.

“The arrested pair was locked up at Bedfordview SAPS on charges of reckless and negligent driving but were later released on bail of R1 000 each,” said Kgasago.

Kgasago further said two speedsters were arrested on N3 southbound between Linksfield turnoff and Gillooly’s Interchange.

“One was caught doing 167km/h in a white Mercedes sedan and the other was apprehended doing 165km/h. Reasons given were that an asthmatic passenger was being rushed home and lateness to work,” said Kgasago.

He said both drivers were charged at Bedfordview SAPS with reckless and negligent driving.

Kgasago said that all speedsters are expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.
