Latest: Irish citizen Stanley Currie (66) to return home following SA ordeal

It is believed that while living on the streets, Currie's belongings were stolen from him.

Edenvale Community Police Forum (ECPF) chairperson Sheryl Damerell has released details surrounding discovery of Irish citizen, Stanley Currie (66) in Edenvale yesterday.

According to Damerell Currie decided to visit SA after communicating with a woman online for an extended period of time.

While in SA, Currie sought accommodation in hotels within the greater Edenvale area.

“When he ran out of money he took to the streets,” said Damerell.

Currie’s family appealed to the Missing Persons – South Africa Facebook page for assitance when they had not heard from him.

After a few days, a security officer from Mamba contacted the CPF and said he had found Currie lying on a pavement in Edenvale.

Currie was positively identified yesterday. It is believed that while living on the streets, Currie’s belongings were stolen from him.

“He has been in contact with his family and they are grateful that he is alright. Arrangements are currently being made for his return to Ireland,” said Damerell.

Damerell also thanked everyone for their assistance.

Edenvale SAPS spokesperson, Capt Jean Olckers, confirmed that Currie had been found in Edenvale on January 7 and taken to the station.

He said police are investigating a case of theft after Currie reported that his valuables and luggage was stolen from him.
