She said crimes which show a rise during the festive season include bank followings, hijackings, fraud, robberies, theft of motor vehicles and theft out of motor vehicles.

“Residents and business owners need to remain vigilant during this time of year.”

Some of the crime prevention tips Tsotsotso provided include:

• To not withdraw large sums of money from the bank.

• To be alert while driving and frequently check if you are being followed.

• Not to pull into their driveway when arriving at home but instead, stop in the street and wait for the gate to open before entering your property.

• Not to buy items online or from strangers without seeing the items first.

• To be careful and vigilant of surroundings when wearing expensive jewellery and accessories.

Tsotsotso said if residents are planning on going on holiday they must not post their plans on social media.

“Criminals know how to use social media and can take advantage of the information you post online,” said Tsotsotso.

She said while away, homeowners should ask friends and family members to frequent the property and ensure everything is in order.

In addition to this property owners should use light timers instead of leaving their lights switched on.

Tsotsotso wished community members a merry Christmas and happy holidays.

“Community members can feel safe knowing that Sebenza SAPS are here for them,” she said.

“The station can be called at any time to report a crime.”
