Art group vibrantly flourishes

“They welcomed like-minded artists into their circle, and a year later it had grown to such an extent that they decided to formalise the group.”

The Paint & Palette Group based in Edenvale is one of the largest social art groups in Gauteng.

Founded in 1973 by Dorothy Goyns, the group can be considered a stepping stone into the world of art through friends, examples and experiences.

It has a membership of 450, some of which have been with the group for 35 years.

Amateurs are welcomed and encouraged while professionals enjoy learning new skills.

Demonstrations coordinator Moira Simonsen said Dorothy and friends decided to regularly meet, paint together, do demonstrations for each other, and share knowledge.

“They welcomed like-minded artists into their circle, and a year later it had grown to such an extent that they decided to formalise the group, thus the Paint & Palette Group was born,” said Moira.

Once formalised, in 1974, the group’s first exhibition was held at the Springs Church Hall to encourage inexperienced artists to unleash their creativity.

Moira said although Dorothy died in 1988, her sharing and giving nature remained with the group for decades after, thanks to several committees.

She said the success of the group is owed to the many well-known artists who have given demonstrations and shared their painting, marketing and teaching skills.

Demonstrations are organised every third Saturday of the month with the exception of December, at the Edenvale Community Centre.

If a demonstration proved popular, a subsequent workshop is organised. Three workshops are held per year.

Moira said the group’s fellowship includes individuals ranging from amateurs, professionals, teachers and members of other art associations.

“There have even been three generations of a family who still are members like Marisa Rees, her mother and founding member, Nel McKieth and her daughter, Kate Rees,” said Moria.

“We would like to invite artists and people interested in art to join our monthly meeting and enjoy the fantastic camaraderie experienced by this group.”
