Nineteen suspects arrested for robbery

JOBURG – SAPS responded and rushed to the scene where they found the men waiting for the trucks to come back and fetch the other goods. Some of the suspects were already wearing the stolen jeans.

Johannesburg East SAPS cluster arrested 19 suspects for business robbery at the corner of Angus and Merino roads in City Deep on November 3.

According to Jeppe SAPS spokesperson Capt Richard Munyayi, two armed men pointed firearms at a security guard who was on duty.

“They tied him up and took clothing. The two suspects were later joined by a group of men who were travelling in two trucks, a 10 and an eight-tonner, which did not have number plates.

“The 19 suspects opened the containers and took out clothes and loaded them into the two trucks. The trucks left with the drivers while the other suspects stayed behind, stealing some more goods out of the containers,” he said.

Munyayi said other security guards who were on duty on the other side alerted the police about the robbery in progress.

“SAPS responded and rushed to the scene where they found the men waiting for the trucks to come back and fetch the other goods. Some of the suspects were already wearing the stolen jeans,” he said.

They were arrested and taken to Cleveland SAPS where they were charged with business robbery and detained. The suspects, between 21 and 34, will appear in court soon.

Munyayi said the trucks and some of the goods that were stolen have not been found.

“We appeal to anyone who might have information to contact 10111 or Cleveland SAPS on 011 607 5745,” he said.
