Cleveland SAPS hosted a crime prevention campaign in Malvern to increase community awareness of prevalent crimes in the area.
Other departments that took part in the campaign on October 31, included the social crime prevention unit and the department of social development’s probation office.
Hijackings pose the most serious problem, especially along Jules Street, according to Cleveland SAPS spokesperson, Capt Johan Jordaan.

“Awareness was created with regards to ATM crimes, drug abuse and, especially, carjackings,” said Jordaan.
“This involved handing pamphlets out with the relevant safety tips to community members.
“The public was also provided with tips for the upcoming holiday season. We try to make the community members aware of these crimes and encourage them not to get involved in them.”
Jordaan said the community was overwhelmingly welcoming to the police’s effort and asked questions.

He said the community needs to participate more actively as the eyes and ears of the police despite the low confidence they have in the police.
“We want the community to be involved in policing and report all crimes.
“People don’t trust the police anymore because of all the corruption taking place. This must be corrected.”
