UPDATE: Security guard in serious but stable condition after Stoneridge armed robbery (VIDEO)

"The guard was rushed to hospital. He is in a serious but stable condition."

A suspect arrested in connection with the armed robbery at Stoneridge Shopping Centre earlier today is facing charges of business robbery, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The suspect was arrested at the Greenstone taxi rank after he and seven others allegedly robbed a secondhand store at Stoneridge Shopping Centre.

During the robbery a security guard was injured when he was shot in the face by one of the suspects.

“The guard was rushed to hospital in a serious but stable condition,” said Edenvale SAPS Spokesperson Capt Jean Olckers.

Olckers said the robbery occurred at 10am.

“Eight suspects armed with handguns robbed a secondhand dealership in the centre. While attempting to flee the scene the suspects were spotted by a security guard,” said Olckers.

Olckers said when the guard saw the suspects he intervened and was shot.

“A shootout occurred between the suspects and security officers,” said Olckers.

About 14 cartridges and a live round were found at the scene.

“One firearm was recovered when the suspect was arrested. The remaining suspects fled the area in a white sedan,” said Olckers.

Olckers said the matter will be investigated by the Trio Crimes Unit.
