Jeppe High School for Girls’ design learners did it again at the Star Design-an-Ad competition.
The school has been participating in the Star Design competition since 2012.

“The interest in this year’s competition was higher than ever with 35 of our design students submitting 43 entries between them,” said headmistress Dina Gonçalves.
This was the sixth year Jeppe Girls had won awards at this prestigious event.
“Design-an-Ad provides our girls with the wonderful opportunity of competing against learners from other schools. We are extremely proud of their achievements.

“Design is a key discipline in developing creative and innovative solutions for the future, and we are delighted that this competition allows the learners to explore design practices in the real world,” said Gonçalves.
Robyn Luke was this year’s overall winner.
Her winning advertisement for the Oriental Plaza will feature on a billboard on the M1 South from October.

Robyn is no stranger to The Star’s Design-an-ad competition.
In Grade 11 she won the back page category for her poster of ‘The Star 130 years a legacy’.
“I’m thrilled at the honour of having my poster used as billboard artwork for the Oriental Plaza and can’t wait to see it up,” said Robyn.
Her favourite medium is gouache which is a unique type of paint that is like an opaque watercolour and oil paint.
She used gouache paint for her winning advertisement.
She said she started drawing at the age of six.
“When I got to high school, I discovered more about artwork and found out that I could do all sorts of art. I find painting and drawing very therapeutic, as it helps me to reflect on myself,” shared Robyn.
Many of her pieces include people’s faces as she enjoys capturing people’s emotions.
Other winners were Grade 11 Nonthando Moalusi for the front page.
She received an R80 000 bursary from AAA School of Advertising.
Sarah Michelle Marias won the prize for the back page supplement.
Finalists in the competition were Masego Ramatsetse and Ivana Garvanski in Grade 12, Mbali Ncube in Grade 11 and Ashleigh Templeton in Grade 10.
