A police Sergeant was shot and killed by a stray bullet at a fast-food outlet in Cleveland yesterday.
It is believed that the police officer who was based at crime intelligence, Johannesburg East and his wife, an administrative clerk at the Cleveland Police Station, were caught up in the shooting at around 3pm.
Preliminary reports indicate that a suspect exited his vehicle at the service station where the fast-food outlet is based and aimed a firearm at a near-by taxi driver.

By the time the suspect opened fire his target had escaped but the two shots discharged hit the police officer and another woman.
The officer died at the scene and the woman is recovering in hospital.
The motive for the shooting is yet to be confirmed.
Police are appealing to anyone with more information to contact the SAPS as soon as possible.

The identity of the police officer has been withheld at this stage as his family has yet to be notified of his death.
Gauteng Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Deliwe de Lange urged investigators to leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the suspect who escaped is found and brought to book.
