Cleveland and Jeppe SAPS featured in top 30

JOBURG – Jeppe SAPS continue to be burdened with murder investigations.

Police Minister Bheki Cele and Police Commissioner Khehla Sitole released the 2017/2018 crime figures in Parliament on September 11.

Cleveland and Jeppe were featured in the top 30 stations nationwide for the most cases reported over the 2017/2018 period.

Jeppe SAPS continues to be burdened with murder investigations. It is also in the top two for the number of carjacking cases in South Africa and the top six for cases of robbery with aggravating circumstances. Among the other crimes which showed an increase was contact crimes and TRIO crimes.

Stats in numbers: Jeppe SAPS

April 2017 to March 2018 total crimes reported: 5 094

Murder went up by 42 per cent with 125 cases reported for the 2017/2018 period. This went up from 88 reported in 2016/2017. Attempted murder decreased by 10.1 per cent with 125 cases reported. This went down from 139 reported in 2016/2017.

The station is in the top six in South Africa for cases involving robbery with aggravating circumstances with 1 143 cases reported in the 2017/2018 period. This increased from 1 058 cases which were reported in the 2016/2017 period. A total of 137 cases were reported for robbery at non-residential premises. A further 262 cases were reported for car hijacking and 479 for TRIO crimes. A decrease in crime was reported for common robbery, rape, arson and business burglary.

Cleveland SAPS

Carjacking went up by 23.3 per cent with 143 cases reported for the 2017/18 period. This went up from 116 reported in 2016/17. TRIO crimes also increased from 271 of 2016/2017 period to 324 for the 2017/2018 period. A further 10 cases were reported for truck hijacking.

Yeoville SAPS

Yeoville SAPS was not part of the top 30 stations in South Africa.
