Learners take part in annual Nelson Mandela School Sleepout™

The SleepOut™ Movement has raised more money than any other single overnight event in South Africa’s history.

On what would have been Madiba’s 100th birthday, schools across the country were invited to join in The Nelson Mandela School Sleepout™ empowered by Liliesleaf: For The Tomorrow Trust.

The 2018 SleepOut™ Movement hopes to see 200 schools participate in the sleep out today, July 18.

The events will be held on the various schools’ premises with the aim of collecting donations for the country’s schools in need while collectively breaking a Guinness Book of Records record for Madiba.

Speaking at the launch of the 2018 SleepOut™ Movement recently held at Chancellor House, Mobgeni Sibanda, Redhill deputy head boy and 2017 School SleepOut™ brand ambassador said, “The SleepOut™ initiative gives you more awareness of what is out there, especially going to different beneficiaries, like children’s homes and really opening your eyes to what’s happening in South Africa.”

The SleepOut™ Movement has raised more money than any other single overnight event in South Africa’s history.

In order to drive The Nelson Mandela School Sleepout™ 10 school brand ambassadors were appointed at schools across the country.

Under-resourced schools will receive the items and or services collected by the School SleepOut™ events.

EduWeek is a stakeholder partner to the School SleepOut ™ and working with The Tomorrow Trust have nominated a number of under-resourced schools.

In Gauteng, beneficiary schools include Alexandra Secondary School, Bokamoso Secondary School, Diepsloot Primary School, Emfundisweni Primary School, Ingqayizivele Secondary School, Kwadedangendlale Secondary School, Thabisang Primary School and Tlamatlama Primary School.
