SAPS seek man charged with rape

JOBURG – Basi (who is also known as Jeqe) was granted bail after he appeared in court. The court case was postponed to October 18 last year but Basi did not pitch.

The Johannesburg East Family Child and Sexual Violence Unit (FCS) is looking for Vumelani Basi (37) in connection with rape.

Spokesperson for Jeppe SAPS Captain Richard Munyayi said a man raped a woman and threatened to kill her at Denver on March 9 last year.

“The victim reported the case at Cleveland SAPS and Basi was arrested on the same day. Basi (who is also known as Jeqe) was granted bail after he appeared in court.

“The court case was postponed to October 18 last year but the suspect failed to appear in court. He has since been on the run and disappeared without a trace. A warrant for his arrest has been issued,” he said.

Munyayi said the accused was staying at Denver Hostel and he is believed to be from Mahlabathini in KwaZulu-Natal.
