MCF petition against issuing of liquor licences

“We don’t want more liquor establishments in our area. We have too many already.”

Malvern Community Forum started a petition against the issuing of liquor licences due to concerns about the number of liquor establishments in the area.

Member of the forum, Nomvula Sidu said the petition started after the forum noticed an advert for business premises applying for liquor licences.

“It is our duty as a community forum to address all issues that affect the safety, security and surroundings of the people living in the area. We are also concerned about the environmental impact as well as reduced property value,” she said.

Sidu said the forum is trying to involve community members.

“We cannot fight this alone as it affects every resident. We want the community to have a say in everything that is happening. If they feel that we need more taverns we will respect that but most residents were happy with our petition. We don’t want more liquor establishments in our area. We have too many already.

“We also went to Malvern Primary School to ask Grade Seven learners to write letters on how they feel about alcohol. “The letters show that alcohol affects everyone, children included. We have completed the first round of the petition and have already submitted the first list to the Gauteng Liquor Board together with letters that were written by school learners,” she said.
