Eleven-year-old Cassidy Scott might be young but she already understands the concept of ubuntu.
The learner of Crawford School had become aware that unlike her, many people do not have shoes to keep their feet warm and protected. She approached her mom, Jackie Scott, the deputy manager of Rand Aid’s Thornhill Manor, with the idea of a collection being done among the residents of the retirement village.
“This was run past the entertainment committee and they fell in love with the idea. It was agreed that the shoe collection would be an ideal Mandela Day project,” said Scott.
A request was sent out to all 213 cottage residents to make donations of all kinds and sizes of shoes. The response was overwhelming and 214 pairs of shoes were collected.
These will be sorted and sent to Rand Aid’s Thembalami Care Centre, the Joseph Gerard Old Age Home and Crèche and the Marikana Orphanage in Hillbrow.
“It was wonderful to see the villagers coming together to reach out to less fortunate members of the community,” said Scott.
“We are now thinking of doing another collection, this time of school shoes to donate to the Laerskool Nobel Primary School in Modderfontein.
“Well done to all who participated and opened their hearts and wallets to support and assist in this worthwhile cause.”
