She said that women should not stand back and take responsibility.

She wants women to understand both gender structures in order to move away from the old gender structure.

Mona said that females have forgotten their roles in society.

Mona wants to bring men and women together, to co-operate and said that men were welcome to attend the talk as well.

“We also intend to advise the youth and teach them life skills,” said Mona.

This initiative to celebrate Women’s Day in collaboration with the Bedfordview Library was arranged by Ward 20 committee members, who work closely with Clr Jill Humphrey.

The two members in attendance who arranged this were Vis Naidoo whose portfolio is sport, heritage, recreation, arts and culture (SHRAC) and Judith Persi whose portfolio is women and children.

“With my SHRAC portfolio, we are working closely with the Bedfordview Library to do public outreach programmes,” said Vis Naidoo.

He said that they have already done an outreach programme previously for Mandela Day and plan to do more talks and workshops on a monthly basis.

The message behind Mandela Day was to reiterate the call from the Nelson Mandela Foundation that “everyone has the ability and the responsibility to change the world for the better”.

The talk on July 18 was titled Finding Your Purpose this Mandela Day to build the Country of our Dreams and was also delivered by Mona and Vis Naidoo, sharing their purpose and experience on climbing Kilimanjaro in 2016 on the Trek4Mandela expedition.

Vis, Mona and Brendon Sboniso, another ward committee member, focused on youth want to focus on empowering the youth and the public in general.

They will work closely with Philip Lesufi, the head librarian to make these talks available at the library for all to attend.
